Abstract

This article aims to review the body of research on ceremonial speeches of popular world leaders and their genre of persuasive discourse—ceremonial speech that includes special occasion, religious, political, and editorial rhetoric. The review of related past studies revealed that some studies lack a clear explication of the theoretical framework which informs the study. It was also found that the outcomes of other studies were not fully discussed within the theoretical framework adopted. Yet other studies appeared to be confined to the application of single theory/approach to explore the multifaceted phenomenon of persuasive discourse. Despite these somewhat limited orientations to the research, much of the critical work concerned show that the persuasive strategies and devices employed by the dominant social actors include a range of rhetorical proofs, questions, and figures of speech, as well as the speech acts of directives, assertives, representatives, and expressives as the way forward in the field.

Abstract

Khuswala kumuse (funeral oratory) is a central rite among the Babukusu. It is a significant ritual that defines their worldview and how they relate with their cosmology and themselves. Given its centrality in the Bukusu cosmology, it is important to examine how the orator puts to use language to construct meanings that enable this society to understand itself. This paper is an investigation of how Nationalism is constructed in the Bukusu funeral oratory. Data was collected from pre- recorded cassette tapes of speeches of Manguliechi (a renowned Bukusu orator) and video tapes of the performance of khuswala kumuse ritual for the late Vice-president of the Republic of Kenya Michael Kijana Wamalwa (purchased from Kenya Broadcasting Cooperation, marketing department). These were transcribed and translated into English and generalizations made on how different aspects of the Bukusu nation are constructed. It was for example noted that the ritual is laden with social, ethical, political and economic aspects that constitute the Babukusu nationhood. Bukusu legends are exalted in the ritual and the people’s identity is portrayed as unique with aspects such as circumcision setting them apart from non-Bukusu. At the same time, Bukusu nationhood is set in the overall Kenyan nation highlighting a sense of unity. Nevertheless, the oratory is still highly valued by Babukusu even if they no longer live in traditional set up since it acts as a mark of identity, a means of social differentiation.

Abstract

The theory of local school management focused on the decentralization of authority of decision making to school site and placed emphasis upon student learning. there was a significant correlation between local school management and student performance because the students in self-managing schools perform much better than those in school with traditional school management. Based upon the importance of student performance in local school management, this paper aimed to review the model of resource allocation in the field of local school management, which valued student academic performance highly, to uncover how resource allocation contributed to student learning.

Abstract

In recent educational reforms in Mexico school heads play an important role to carry out the proposed improvements at school levels. This paper presents a general perspective of school heads preparation and development in Mexico. Based on an analysis of recent educational reforms, and also research conducted in Mexico and at international level it is concluded that Mexico is not doing enough to professionally prepare and develop school heads. There has been some progress for school heads with recently educational policy particularly in the new procedures for appointment to headship. However, professional preparation remains unattended since will not be offered or required preparation in leadership and school management for newly appointed heads. The panorama in the future seems problematic since it is considered just preparation for practising heads. This leaves Mexico in a weak position compared to what is done by the countries that are at the forefront of school heads’ development.

Abstract

In the past, various female breast diseases, especially breast cancer, often required a total mastectomy. With advances in medical treatment, developments in chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and changes in the concept of breast surgery, concerns about the anatomical appearance of patients’ breasts and their prognosis have been incorporated into the treatment in addition to targeting the initial disease. In recent years, breast conserving surgery has not only performed well in preserving the anatomical appearance of patients’ breasts, but has also demonstrated the same prognosis as conventional total mastectomy when combined with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Additionally, breast conserving surgery has been consistently verified for its therapeutic efficacy and superiority, receiving successive recognition from relevant professionals as a safe and effective treatment for patients who meet the criteria, and it may even result in satisfactory curative efficacy. Therefore, this study attempts to guide the future direction of breast surgery by presenting new scientific evidence obtained through the integration of academic research and literature resources using technology.

This study employed the Web of Science Core Collection database, an online research-oriented academic resource integration platform, and made full use of the platform’s information search, data access, management, and evaluation features to explore knowledge and information related to breast surgery as a whole. Additionally, bibliometric analysis was conducted by adopting the modeling and clustering techniques of VOSviewer The data structure and relationship weights of the literature were visualized in a simulated vector space through clustering and mapping algorithms, presenting the trends of changes in the knowledge structure in an obvious, direct, and colorful way.

Abstract

In the era of globalization, the better future development of city requires the construction of an international and promising city image for its promotion. English captions as an indispensable part of city promotional film, is crucial in the city image construction. Based on Halliday’s transitive system theory, this paper adopted qualitative and quantitative methods to interpret the ideational functions of captions in the latest English-version city promotional films of Xi’an in terms of clauses. ELAN 6.0 was utilized as the research tool. The study found that material process accounted for the highest proportion (62.77%) in English captions of the city promotional film of Xi’an, which was conducive to the promotion of nature and culture— the key element of Xi’an’s city image. The frequent use of material processes contributed to create a more vivid and resonant city image. The research also showed that the emphasis on the publicity of the existing advantages and the description of the future development needs were beneficial to the effective construction of city image. Besides, different constituent element required different choice of transitivity process to maximize its effect for a better city image construction. This study aimed to summarize the successful experience of city promotional films and offer reference to the production of city promotional films in the future.

Abstract

The challenge of the continuous development of antibiotic resistance by pathogenic bacteria is a major health concern worldwide. The efforts at finding solutions to this challenge have led to the development of interest and investigation on the use of natural honey in the treatment of bacterial infections. This study was therefore carried out to investigate the efficacy of the Nigerian natural honey in the treatment of wound infections. Samples of honey purchased from Ijebu-Ode, Nigeria were investigated for antimicrobial effect, using bacterial isolates from infected wound swabs, that were cultured and examined for morphological and biochemical characteristics by standard methods. The antibacterial activity, Minimum Inhibition Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the honey samples were determined by doubling dilution and agar diffusion methods. The bacterial isolates reacted differently to the various concentrations of honey. The MIC ranged between 7.5 mg/ml to 1.88 mg/ml for Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes; while Salmonella Typhi and Shigella dysenteriae both had MIC of 3.75 mg/ml. The MBC values ranged between 7.5 mg/ml to 1.88 mg/ml for all the bacterial isolates. This study confirms the suitability of the Nigerian honey as therapeutic agent against infection by the tested bacteria pathogens. The need for international standardization of the quality of honey products for therapeutic and prophylactic application was also discussed.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between principal's leadership, school organizational climate, and teachers' job performance. The population comprised 164 teachers at State Senior High Schools in Merauke regency. In order to have representative samples, the researcher used the table of Krecjie. Based on the table of Krecjie, if the population is approximately 160-170, then the sample size could be approximately 113-118. For this research, the sample was 118 state senior high schools’ teachers or 71.95 % of the population. Questionnaires were the main tool of the research to collect data. The data were given quantitative treatment. In order that data were analyzed well, the researcher using the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16 for Windows. Based on the data analyses, the research revealed that: (a) there was a significant relationship between principal’s leadership and teachers’ job performance at state senior high schools in Merauke regency, Papua; and (b) there was a significant relationship between school organizational climate and teachers’ job performance at state senior high schools in Merauke regency, Papua.
