Abstract

Vocabulary is one of the hottest issues among Chinese students and teachers. Many students have difficulty in vocabulary learning, and teachers try their best in vocabulary, but the result is still not so pleasant. This phenomenon arouses many thinking and reflections. Someone pointed out there exist some misunderstandings in vocabulary teaching and learning. For example, the vocabulary teaching was cut off from the language situation; vocabulary learning without strategy guiding; and the enhancement of vocabulary lacked practice. The traditional way to vocabulary teaching is based on the word list in the textbook, which is boring for the students. Even the teachers make effort to complete the task, but the result is still unpleasant. Thus an action research was designed to try to solve the vocabulary teaching and learning problem. The results show that: The action research could improve students’ vocabulary knowledge and the ability of language use, and then internalize the knowledge; the action research could guide students in effective strategy of learning and remembering words; the action research could enhance the review job; the personal notebook could help student form a good habit of systematically review. Also to the teacher, they could know the students’ study condition. This can form a positive cycle between the teacher and the students.

Abstract

This study examines the human-elephant conflict in the context of environmental journalism in Sri Lanka. The paper is based on empirical study and reviews of the relevant literature in environmental sociology and political ecology. The changing political economic policies and development activities have affected the reciprocal interaction between society and nature resulting many socio-environmental crises such as the human-elephant conflict which has become a threat to the elephant population as well as to human beings.

The main objective of the paper is to assess the human-elephant conflict in the context of environmental journalism in Sri Lanka. The paper draws relevant literature from archives and print media. Content analysis of newspaper articles of Sunday Lankadeepa, Sunday Observer and Sunday Thinakaran published from 2009 to 2013 was carried out based on stratified sampling. The qualitative information with regard to environmental journalism on the human-elephant conflict was collected from 15 in-depth interviews based on purposive sampling.

The findings revealed the main cause for the human-elephant conflict is rapid increase in human population, deforestation in the name of development, conspicuous consumption and socio -economic agricultural policies. The increase of rural habitation has resulted in invading the natural elephant territories by humans. This has become the underline cause for the human elephant conflict in many parts of Sri Lanka. Moreover, the government agricultural economic policies have a major impact on destroying the elephants’ natural habitat. Due to the loss of their habitats and habitat fragmentation, elephants have begun to roam around rural habitation and migrate from place to place attacking and destroying cultivated land and people. On the other hand, media highlights the human-elephant conflict in comparison with other environmental issues sensationalizing the conflict by highlighting and creating a critical socio-environmental issue on the mass culture.

Abstract

There is a growing need for the usage of mobile learning (mLearning) technologies for teaching and learning in order to expand the possibilities of learning anytime anywhere for Open, distance and e-learning programmes. However, the full adoption of mLearning is largely dependent on end user factors such as learners’ self-efficacy. The design of a mobile learning system is as important as the end user efficacy. This study therefore, sought to establish the relationship between learner self-efficacy and adoption of mLearning among Community Health Trainees enrolled on the mHeath platform run by Amref Health Africa in Kenya. Four learner self-efficacy attributes were considered for this study; Self-Efficacy for Navigating the Learning Platform , Self-Efficacy for Peer Interaction , Self-Efficacy for Dependency and Self-Efficacy for Innovativeness . The study population was 3081 participants of the two phases of mHealth project. A sample size of 354 participants was obtained through simple random sampling procedures. A positive and significant relationship was found between learner self-efficacy and adoption of mLearning. It is therefore, concluded that, institutions offering mLearning content should ensure they design mLearning solutions that are interactive and easy to use in order to improve adoption of mLearning by the end user. The study recommends the need for orientation and continuous training in order to improve learner efficacy. The study also recommends 24hour learner supports system to enhance learner adoption of mobile learning.

Abstract

Sri Lanka is unique in ageing experience both demographically and culturally. This research on Sinhalese old age is based on new paradigm anthropological assumption of a ‘human actor’ constructs the culture. The main objective is to capture the multi-faceted meaning bound with the concept elder. Twenty in-depth interviews clarified the meaning behind traits attributed to old age derived through the cultural domain analysis (n=100) followed by the techniques of free listing and pile sorting. Field work was carried out in Maharagama and Balangoda divisional secretariat divisions of Sri Lanka. Traits of elderly vary on the basis of age, gender, social class and living sector. Analysis proposed six not mutually exclusive elder types namely, Predominantly religious, Family centered, Socially integrated, Socially disintegrated, Disengaged sick and Life style oriented.

Abstract

As the information technologies develop, the use of digital media can be seen as standard in many design fields today. Like in all other professions, this rapid alteration makes revisions and updates in interior design education ineluctable. Concerning the fact that interior architectural design education favors a dominance of final presentation over the design process in the studio environment, the evaluation discomforts caused by the computer generated presentations become much more critical. The main intention of this paper is to question, whether the attitudes of the students and the instructors on the subject is coherent with what they put into practice and discuss the reasons of these discrepancies. While majority of the instructors say that they positively approach to combined hand and computer techniques, the analysis of the final grade distribution for each technique displays another fact. Success ratio of the computer only presented projects are much greater than both hand drawn and hand and computer combined technique used projects. The results arise some major questions for the design education community to discuss.

In recent years, with an increasing number of scientific research findings at colleges and universities, the management of them is increasing step by step. Meanwhile, the work task is also growing. Wonderful management of scientific research is of great significance to promote the development of scientific research in higher educational institutions. This paper, aiming at disadvantages existing in the management of scientific research in our country, put forward a suggestion that is to enhance the management effectiveness of the scientific research achievements at colleges and universities by sounding the management system, making full use of the modern information technology, increasing the investment of funds, realizing the combination of production as soon as possible, strengthening the construction of scientific research innovation team to implement the scientific, accurate, timely, orderly scientific research management goal.
