Abstract

A big debate arises in the professional and academic areas when it comes to the discussions about the effectiveness of strategic planning in some specific industries. In particular, private Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) in Brazil are concerned with being regarded as treating education as “merchandise.” This way, they tend to think of strategic planning as a potentially harmful tool that must not overcome the pedagogical plan. In this context, this paper aims to show the strategic possibilities to be developed by organizations in achieving the implementation of the actions contained in strategic planning, including the need to measure the potential outcomes. This paper describes some of the key literature on strategy implementation. It then presents the difficulties for the implementation of strategic planning in an IHE, in order to indicate possible alternatives to guiding such organizations’ private equity through achieving e effectiveness in their planning. The research method includes qualitative research and content analysis to unveil a case study. This research contributes to the discussion of the managerial factors in IHEs and the benefits of the use of management technologies in their daily lives.

Abstract

James Joyce and Pablo Picasso worked in different media and yet while on the surface their work may seem quite dissimilar, a further analysis reveals a much closer relationship: what Picasso was doing with the visual image, Joyce was doing with the verbal image. This paper is a brief analysis of the technical and thematic relationships between the works of Joyce and Picasso. We examine Picasso's and Joyce's corpora primarily in terms of Picasso's Cubist work as it relates to Joyce's Ulysses and how each utilized parallel techniques to achieve similar effects. We also briefly discuss their non-Cubist moments (pre/post-Cubist) and certain thematic similarities. Cubism in art is technically a breaking down of three-dimensional space constructed from a fixed point of view. We find that while Picasso does this visually, Joyce uses the same techniques verbally - his narrative cuts and breaks down traditional perceptual conceptions and transforms them into a new means of experiencing the printed word, much as the Cubist transforms these same perceptual conceptions on the canvas. Examples are provided from the work of both "artists." Another important relationship between Joyce and Picasso is found in their approaches to their material. These spatial/temporal experiments are almost always based upon something real, often autobiographical in nature, which they are deconstructing.

Abstract

This paper examined the effect of capital structure on performance of Non-Bank Financial Institutions in Nigeria. The study employs annual time series data covering the period 2010-2019 obtained from the financial statements of 10 Insurance companies listed on Nigerian stock exchange which is the proxy for non-bank financial institutions. In carrying out the study, debt to asset ratio, equity to asset ratio, company size and asset quality are the proxies for the independent variable (Capital structure) while Return on Equity (ROE) served as the dependent variable. The data collected were analyzed using Ordinary Least Square (OLS) Technique. Other test conducted was stationarity/unit root test. E-view 9.0 was used to analyze the data, test hypothesis and the results obtain indicated among others that Debt to Asset Ratio has a positive and significant influence on the return on investment of the shareholders of the ten (10) insurance companies. The paper concluded that decisions regarding capital structure are very important because they have consequences on the ability of the company to grow, fund operations and new projects at a lower cost, increase returns for shareholders and stay in business, as wrong capital structures may lead to bankruptcy. The study therefore recommended that Insurance companies should pay special attention to firm’s leverages in determining their optimal capital structure. Insurance companies should also take into cognizance the amount of leverage incurred because it is a major determinant of firm’s performance.

Abstract

This paper proposes taxonomy to classify small business operating in networks. This taxonomy is based on linking element or actor between the network and the market. Four types of links are identified: a) a fund provider; b) an outsourcer; c) a cooperative; and d) a stellar organization. The stellar organization, an informal network arrangement based on common objectives of participating members, that appeared in Northern Italy in seventies is described in terms of relevant characteristics. These can be positive or negative. Positive features of the stellar organization include high specialization and multiple mother (or star) companies, resulting in lower unit costs of production and high flexibility in satisfying demand. Negative features includes higher transaction cost diseconomies due to the required multiple negotiations. However, the paper shows that even the high transaction costs can be overcome by systematic gains due to negotiations, a system that is more efficient than the authoritarian command typical of large organizations. The paper also points out the branding weakness of the stellar organization to compete in a global economy.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: This research examined the contribution of organizational determinants to patient satisfaction among cancer patients at Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU), specifically the influence of the care environment, the care process and the effect of organizational policies on patient satisfaction.

Methodology: Cross-sectional methods, involving both quantitative and qualitative, were used. The study sample consisted of 80 patients and 7 clinical team members. Self-administered questionnaires and interview guides were used for data collection from which a response rate of 97.8% was obtained.

Results: The findings indicated very high levels of satisfaction in all areas of the care environment with 88.8% and 75% rating strongly agree for cleanness and the registration process respectively. The care process assessment also showed high levels of satisfaction ranging from 90% for privacy to 56.3% for short waiting time strongly agreeing with the hypothesis statement. Organizational policies had mixed effect on patient satisfaction with medicine availability receiving the high rating (80%) and referral to other services receiving very low rating with only 15% of the participants strongly agreeing with the statement.

It was concluded that organizational determinants like the care environment, care process and policies play a crucial role in patient satisfaction.

Significance of results: Given the findings, the study recommended that the management of HAU should uphold the positive aspects of the care environment and process and improve on the policies that affect patient care.

Abstract

The society expects the schooling process to transmit desirable societal norms among learners. Thus cases of undesirable behaviors among the learners have compelled society members to question the effectiveness of teaching methodology used in school system to socialize learners. This study sought to examine the application of Afrocentric teaching methodology to enhance societal norms among secondary school learners in Meru County, Kenya. The study used exploratory descriptive research approach and correlation design. Questionnaires and interview schedules were used to collect data. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and the inferential statistics used for data analysis was Linear Regression Analysis. The study established that integrating Afrocentric teaching methodology had a fair positive correlation with societal norms which implied that integration of Afrocentric teaching methodology into the contemporary Kenyan school system significantly influences societal norms among secondary school learners at 5% level of significance. The findings of this study will provide vital knowledge regarding societal norms besides providing a basis for further research. The researcher recommended that there is need to integrate Afrocentric teaching methodology into the contemporary school system for maximum enhancement of societal norms.

Abstract

This study revolves around one feature of classroom discourse which is speech modifications. It focused on analyzing EFL teachers‟ common oralphonological, syntactic and lexical discourse modification strategies and their impact on students‟ reaction.The focus was on the common types of phonological, syntactic and lexical speech modifications that include sentence simplification, using simple words, repetition of words and utterances, the speed of speech, Intonation, stress, and raising the voice. The researcher observed and recorded 3 classes to pinpoint these strategies and their effects on students‟ interaction. The researcher also analyzed the recordings using a checklist she designed. The results showed that ELI teachers of proficiency level 104 students made use of a lot of phonological, syntactic and lexical speech modification strategies. Moreover, students reactrelatively positively toward it. These strategies entailed promoting interaction in the class.
