Abstract

The uniqueness of crime against women of India is its disguise as sociocultural practices. People, including women, believe these practices are for their well being and for that of society. These practices are so deeply intermingled with the sociocultural lifestyles that, in spite of a plethora of corrective legislation, to date not a single ill practice demeaning women has been eradicated. Rather, in emerging situations under globalization, these practices are taking new forms leading to new consequences for women of Indian origin living across the horizons. This paper reviews the circumstances and proposes solutions to eradicate these unjust practices by making a major paradigm shift in the social system and reconstructing social reality to empower women by using life course perspective.

ABSTRACT

The study sought to examine the effect of ownership structure on financial performance of manufacturing firms listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange in Kenya. The study focused on four types of ownership that include; government ownership, foreign ownership, management ownership and local ownership. The study adopted a descriptive research design and targeted a total of 10 manufacturing firms listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange. Data was collected from targeted firm’s financial statements for a period of 5 years (2016-2020). The study established: a significant and positive relationship between government ownership and financial performance of manufacturing firms listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange; the study concluded that ownership structure of listed manufacturing firms affects financial performance. Based on the findings, the study recommended the need for firm managers and general investors to be trained on best ownership plan that can aid firm’s productivity.

Abstract

Under the global economic activities, the scale of competition in various industries is larger than in the past, and the staff affects whether the company's industry can continue to operate and whether They are more competitive and irreplaceable with other related industries. How can they attract or comfort them in various ways to stay and continue for a long time? Service is an important topic? Sea crews are different from general companies or institutional industries. They may experience various winds and waves and changeable conditions at sea. They have to overcome not only to be familiar with the difference between the living environments of ships and onshore, but also to overcome the most painful ones. "Seasickness" is also due to the lower willingness of people to stay which will increase the burden of the current job. With the development of the times, information technology and sensing technology continue to develop, the Internet of Things architecture sensor detection function, can provide more personalized and diversified services, through RFID and other portable devices to facilitate the use of personal information users and system device management, and then understand the physical and psychological state of the crew, can effectively achieve real-time management of human resources management (personnel health monitoring). In addition, the use of advanced sensing instruments, equipment for the operation of equipment regular or irregular measurement, analysis and identification, in order to facilitate the current status of the operation of each equipment, and the results of testing and diagnosis can be used as the basis for maintenance, the repair period of the mastery and material preparation also have predictable functions, and thus reduce maintenance costs and improve economic efficiency. Therefore, this research hopes to use sensing technology and IoT to record various data records of personnel working on deck or bilge, such as: travel distance, sleep time, Cardiopulmonary function or other relevant data of the working environment, and then construct the crew's measurement indicators of work load, vocational skills, salary and benefits, and turnover intention.

Abstract

Research from a number of social psychological traditions suggests that social perceivers should be more concerned with evaluating others’ intentions (i.e., warmth) relative to evaluating others’ ability to act on those intentions (i.e., competence). The present research examined whether warmth evaluations have cognitive primacy over competence evaluations in a direct reaction-time comparison and whether the effect is moderated by ingroup versus outgroup membership. Participants evaluated as quickly as possible whether warmth versus competence traits described photographs of racial ingroup versus outgroup members expressing neutral emotions. Responses supported the hypothesis that evaluations of warmth take precedence over evaluations of competence; participants were faster to evaluate others on warmth-related traits compared to competence-related traits. Moreover, this primacy effect was not moderated by racial group membership. The data from this research speak to the robustness of the primacy of warmth in social evaluation.

Abstract

Among the challenges in dementia care is providing assistance to caregivers so that they can remain healthy and able to care for their family member and take the time to care for self. Adult daughters can exert a significant degree of control over their own health and are inclined to do so if self-care and self-efficacy are perceive as of greater importance than perceived barriers and burden. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the factors that may assist adult daughters in taking care of self while taking care of their cognitively impaired mothers. This study used Heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology as the method for interpreting the research question, do adult daughters who care for their cognitively impaired mothers care for self. The constitutive pattern identified was Doing-while-waiting from the three interpreted themes: Doing things-doing something, Place and space, and Waiting on-holding-on. By experiencing waiting the adults daughters experienced compassion energy by being present with compassion, identifying patterns to intentionally know what needs to be done to care for their mothers and this is how they expressed caring for self.

Abstract

A pilot study on wheedling strategy in marriage, in interpersonal communication is conducted to examine the approach and perception of Malay adult in view of wheedling concept and loving expression in marriage. Love and intimacy are known to be the unifying factor in marriage, more so when it reaches an extended period in life. In expressing their love and intimacy among married couples, interpersonal communication plays an imminent role as a medium to strengthen the ties among the two, as well as to ripen the existing relationship in their marriage. Common perception has it that the Malays react very differently to their Western counterparts in the practical aspect of affection towards their partners. The latter would be seen as more caring and at ease in expressing their affection. Generally, the Malay man are known to be lacking when it comes to expressing their affection, as well as being egoistic about their position as "the man of the family".

The values we subscribe to holds tightly to the religion and cultural aspects, which are different than to those of Western community. In contrast to that, the latter is known to be very open in expressing their affection towards their partner. Due to that phenomenon, it has become a common thought that the Malay chaps are difficult in expressing theirs and does not concern much of the partner's feelings.

It is common that the behavior of Western males have become a referral point and claimed to be representing all male human beings in the world. However, the Malay blokes have their own, unique ways in strategising wheedling techniques towards their partner, in achieving marital longevity. The influences of culture and religion have shaped their way of tackling the techniques and affection with their partners. As

such, this study have adopted the qualitative method where in-depth interviews were conducted among eight male, married informants. Their age range are between 35 to 60 years old, and have been married for more than 10 years, all of whom are residing in the Klang Valley. Among subjects that will be studied are the interpersonal method and approach used by these informants in preserving the marital harmony through wheedling strategy and their affection thrown to their wives.

Abstract

In this paper, I am troubled by the xenophobic situation that has come to characterise Black South Africans to the point of overshadowing any goodness South Africa has collectively achieved. The paper attempts to initiate an objective debate on the possible reasons, both for the acts of xenophobia and (passive) complicity with it. The paper closely analyses these reasons and suggests a way forward. The authors do not attempt to judge those labelled xenophobic but challenge politicians and the elite to come out and speak out against such attitudes and behaviour. In other words, political leaders are called upon to take a moral position and condemn the so-called xenophobic acts more strongly than they have done until now. Accordingly, I ask a question: “Have we lost the underlying spirit of Ubuntu ”expressed in motho ke motho ka batho ba bang”. The author offers his own understanding of this Ubuntu spirit, in the hope of making sense of what Ubuntu entails in the present context. In other words, the paper challenges political leaders, religious leaders and even traditional leaders in our communities to speak-out with one voice and defend the ideals of Ubuntu.

Abstract

West Indian literature of the 1950s and early 1960s was characterized by a heightened sensitivity to prevalent social conditions. Prominent among the features of the literature of this period was the emphasis on social realism and communal experience, as against individual fortunes. While the bulk of Jamaica’s wealth was owned by the white establishment and middle-class who constituted a minute percentage of the population, the majority of the blacks were the urban dispossessed who inhabited over-congested slums and lived a deprived existence. These slum-dwellers frequently adopted survival strategies to combat their exclusion from the Island’s wealth. The objective of this paper is to investigate Patterson’s vision in The Children of Sisyphus and determine if, and to what extent, these survival strategies influence the writer’s vision in the novel. Being a literary research, the work is mainly library-based. First, Orlando Patterson’s The Children of Sisyphus has been rigorously examined and as many relevant critical references as could be found have been used to sharpen the focus of the arguments. In the end, it is found out that Patterson’s vision in The Children of Sisyphus is, to some extent, informed by Pentecostalism and Rastafarianism – the two religion-based survival mechanisms – adopted by the characters in the novel. But very importantly, his vision is conveyed through his interpretation of a Sisyphian myth which reiterates that man is doomed because he is trapped in a tragic world of unending suffering and paradoxes.
