Abstract

The purpose of the course evaluation survey (CES) is to obtain student’s feedback on various courses offered through a particular program that will help to take appropriate action to improve the quality of teaching and learning process. Accordingly, this study was conducted to determine the relationship between overall satisfaction and the other variables captured through the CES tool using regression models. Materials and Methods: The course evaluation survey data (N=3,846) belonging to the College of Nursing of the University of Dammam (UD) which was utilized for studying the relationship between overall satisfaction and a set of explanatory variables such as (i) course specific information available at the start of the course; (ii) Instructor’s effectiveness; (iii) Infrastructural facilities available as per the course requirements and; (iv) abilities developed by the students through the course. A stepwise regression model was used to predict the overall satisfaction (dependent) and the other explanatory variables (N=4). Results: Among the variables studied, the instructor’s effectiveness tend to have a close relationship with the overall satisfaction of the students in CES (coefficient of β is 0.472 and p<0.001). Conclusion: It is concluded that the instructor related activities have high impact on students overall satisfaction about the courses belonging to the Nursing program.

Abstract

The dynamics of a shrinking economy in Kenya, reduced government capitation to universities, the rising cost of tuition and other systemic changes have exposed university students to hardships including food insecurity. These rising costs coupled with the clamour for access and acquisition of higher education in the face of limited financial capabilities have had far-reaching implications for university students on their campus life in terms of their emotional, social, economic, physical and academic well-being. The average college life for a university student is rapidly changing, whether living on or off campus. There is need to device strategies for mitigating the situation. Based on selected tenets of theory of change, this study investigated the prevalence of food insecurity among students in Moi University and University of Eldoret, and the effects on their academic performance with a view to proposing models for effective improvement. A survey design was employed. The target population comprised of students, deans of students, students’ counsellors and students’ leaders. The deans of students, students’ counsellors and students’ leaders were purposively selected. Random sampling was used to select 4,400 students constituting 10% of the total population of students in the two universities. Questionnaires and interviews were used to collect data. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. It was found that there was prevalence of food insecurity among university students. The food insecurity situation was as a result of financial insecurity brought about by poor family backgrounds and inadequate Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) disbursements. It was concluded that the food insecurity scenario negatively affected the retention and academic performance of university students. It was recommended that universities should expand and enhance the work-study programmes, provide subsidized catering services, institutionalize student support services, engage charitable organizations to support students, seek part-time employment opportunities for needy students and continuous provision of financial counselling services to students.

ABSTRACT

This study sought to examine the effect of micro-finance on financial performance of small and medium enterprises in Kwale County, Kenya. The study adopted a descriptive research design and had a target population of 813 Small and Micro Enterprises managers in Kwale County, Kenya. The study sample was obtained using Yamane’s sampling formula hence 274 SME managers were engaged in this study. Research data was collected using primary and secondary tools. Primary research instruments were tested for validity and reliability before analysis and presentation of findings. Data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics using SPSS and presented in tables and graphs. Study findings established a strong positive relationship between micro-credit, micro-training, micro-insurance and micro-savings and financial performance of Small and Medium enterprises in Kwale County, Kenya. It was therefore concluded that; microfinance positively influences the financial performance of small and medium enterprises in Kwale County, Kenya. The study recommended for training of SME managers on the various loans offered by microfinance so that they can choose wisely based on the need and ability to repay to discourage loan defaults.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to illuminate the challenges women head teachers encounter in advancing to school leadership. This study utilized the phenomenological approach, a branch of qualitative methodologies. Data collection methods involved semi-structured in-depth interviews and a participatory learning and appraisal workshop. This study reveals that the pervasive entrenched culture of patriarchy operates in various ways such as androcentrism, gender and sex stereotypes, sex discrimination and old boy networks at different levels of school organization, management and leadership and causes impediments to women’s advancement to school leadership. The study hopes to abate preconceived notions of women’s underrepresentation in school leadership and subsequently engender strategies to eliminate inequity. It fills the void in the available literature on women teachers and school leadership in Fiji and the Pacific region with implications for further research.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between principal's leadership, school organizational climate, and teachers' job performance. The population comprised 164 teachers at State Senior High Schools in Merauke regency. In order to have representative samples, the researcher used the table of Krecjie. Based on the table of Krecjie, if the population is approximately 160-170, then the sample zise could be approximately 113-118. For this research, the sample was 118 state senior high schools’ teachers or 71.95 % of the population. Questionaires were the main tool of the research to collect data. The data were given quantitative treatment. In order that data were analyzed well, the reseacher using the help of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16 for Windows. Based on the data analyses, the research revealed that: (a) there was a significant relationship between principal’s leadership and teachers’ job performance at state senior high schools in Merauke regency, Papua; and (b) there was a significant relationship between school organizational climate and teachers’ job performance at state senior high schools in Merauke regency, Papua.

Abstract

This paper examines pattern and techniques for municipal waste disposal and the consequent on the health of the population. Data were sought and obtained from observations and administration of semi-structured scheduled interviews to key societal stakeholders and duty-bearers. Findings reveal that unprecedented waste generation in Kaduna Metropolis were spurred by emergent historical population growth. Themajor municipal waste identified include; biodegradables, non- biodegradables, recyclables and inert materials. These were household and industrially generated. Wastes are derelict at open spaces within and between the neighbourhoods; roadsides and channels of river Kaduna, very insignificant area takes their waste to designated dump sites. Preponderant of infectious diseases and annual occurrence of flooding of river Kaduna are linked to improper disposal of wastes, uncollected wastes are threatening human lives and eco-system sustainability. Functional interventions through institutionalisation of public capacity building programmes were identified as sine qua non for effective and efficient waste management at long-run.

ABSTRACT

The objective of this work is to investigate the antibacterial activity of Artocarpus heterophyllus plant. The antibacterial activity of essential oil obtained from plant was examined. To evaluate the antibacterial activities of these extracts; their in vitro antibacterial activities were determined by disk diffusion testing and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were used as test bacterial strains. The analysis of seed part resulted in representing 93.21% of the total oil and the yield were 2.34%. The bacterial strains tested were found to be sensitive to essential oils studied and showed a very effective bactericidal activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranging from 1.50 to 5.20 mg/mL.

ABSTRACT

Agroforestry is a land use option that increase livelihood security and reduce vulnerability to climate and environmental change. According to Planning Commission report “Greening India”, that 33% forest cover can only be achieved through agro-forestry. Agro-forestry has many potential, such as enhance the overall (biomass) productivity, soil fertility improvement, soil conservation, nutrient cycling, micro-climate improvement, carbon sequestration, bio drainage, bio energy and bio fuel etc. Nowadays agro-forestry has gained popularity among farmers, researchers, policy makers and other for its ability to contribute significantly in meeting deficit of tree products, socio-economic and environmental benefits.
