Abstract

This paper presents the use of case analysis in teaching circular motion. The teaching sequence was developed based on the alternative conceptions found during the diagnostic phase of this study. It was implemented to twenty-six (26) students in their second year at the university taking up a program in Bachelor in Secondary Education-Physical Science and enrolled in a course in mechanics. Results revealed that the teaching sequence was helpful in correcting alternative conceptions and in increasing conceptual understanding. Inconsistencies in the conceptions were also minimized.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of human capital on performance of mobile phone companies in Kenya. The study used explanatory. The target population was 381 respondents and the sample size was 170 respondents from the four mobile phone companies in Kenya. The research adopted stratified random sampling technique. The study used mainly primary data which was collected using self-administered questionnaires. Data was analyzed using inferential statistics. The analysis used stata statistical package version 11.0 to aid data analysis. The results were presented using tables. The findings indicated that human capital had a positive significant effect on performance of mobile phone companies. The study recommends that human capital is a key player in establishing performance therefore; managers should introduce more training to improve human capital skills.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is obtain a description of mathematical communication ability (MCA) through 4K learning model based on personality types Guardian, Artisan, Rational, and Idealist. The subjects of this research consist of 4 students 7th grade in State Junior High School 2 Semarang. The techniques to collect data of this research are mathematical communication test and interviews. Test result and interviews are analyzed based on the mathematical communication ability criteria, they are the ability of: (1) writing what are known and what are asked (MCA 1); (2) writing an answer appropriate with the problem intention (MCA 2); (3) writing the reason in problem solving (MCA 3); (4) making a sketch related to problem (MCA 4); (5) writing the technical terms and mathematics symbols (MCA 5); and (6) writing a conclusion with own words (MCA 6). The result of this research showed that: (1) Guardian master MCA1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, but does not master MCA 6; (2) Artisan master MCA 1, 2, 3, and 4, but does not master MCA 5 and 6; (3) Rational master all MCAs; (4) Idealist master MCA 1, 2, and 4, but does not master MCA 3, 5, and 6. ABSTRACT

Orphan hood is a condition in which a child has lost one or both parents and is left to fend for his or her life. Despite the government’s efforts, orphan hood has encroached making orphaned girls not to fully enjoy the free education. Losing a parent during childhood is a crisis that if not handled well may make the child decline academically or drop out of school entirely. Data from Meru South Sub-county education office shows that academic performance of orphaned girls’ is low. If the issue of orphaned girl’s education is not addressed, the country may not achieve its objectives on education for all. There is need to study the factors affecting academic performance of orphaned girls in Meru South Sub-county. The purpose of this study was to assess factors affecting academic performance of orphaned girls in public primary schools in Meru South Sub-county. The study looked at social factors affecting academic performance of orphaned girls. Descriptive survey research design was used. The target population was 600 orphaned girls in 150 public primary schools from which a sample size of 234 orphaned girls in class 6 and 7 was purposively selected for the study. In addition, 20 teachers who teach standard 6 and 7 were included in the sample. Questionnaires were administered to teachers and orphaned girls in the sample population. Socialists and other experts from the Faculty of Education and Resources Development at Chuka University checked the instruments to ensure validity. The computer based statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 17.0 was used to analyze the data. Data was presented by use of frequency distribution tables, bar charts and pie charts. The study found out that academic performance of orphaned girls was affected by social factors. The findings provide information to guide the government and ministry of Education in coming up with policies and mechanisms to address factors affecting academic performance of orphaned girls. It will also help head teachers and teachers to come up with policies and get workable solutions to factors affecting academic performance of orphaned girls.

Abstract

Lufwanyama district has some of the world’s best emeralds and mining, is not contributing to the local economic development. Mining has failed to stimulate local enterprises, traditional industries and access to environmental resources. Mineral wealth continues to benefit the elite. Vulnerable and resources dependent communities bear the socio-economic and environmental costs of loss of access to land, impoverished livelihoods and degraded environments. This research sought to investigate the economic, environmental and social impacts of small scale emerald mining on local community livelihoods in Lufwanyama district. However, this paper will only examine the economic impacts arising. Through the employ of a descriptive survey design, the effects of mining in the area were evaluated. Results indicate that overdependence on mining and poor diversification of livelihood options has hindered development of rural communities. Equitable distribution of employment opportunities and revenue from small scale mining remain a challenge for sustainable local development.

Abstract

To have an ability to cope with the demand in reading English and to develop reading habits in English is significant for EFL students because they are engaged much in reading English literature to achieve their academic success. This article aims at exploring what makes EFL students establish good reading habits in English. This is a multi- case study towards the EFL students who already established good habits in reading English. The results of the present study provided valuable insights that the EFL students’ reading habits in English is established if they live in a good literacy environment with parents reading them aloud, have regular reading motivation and good reading habits in L1, and have access to digitalized texts and phenomenal literary works. Indeed, the establishment of the EFL students’ good reading habits in English is contributed by the individual, social, cultural and technological construct factors.

ABSTRACT

Following the development of learning technologies including the use of e-learning is a necessity. For developed countries, the use of e-learning is clearly not a problem. But for developing countries such as Indonesia, the use of e-learning is a separate problem. These problems are related to the need to fulfill the educational facilities such as electricity networks, the internet, the purchasing power of the people/students, and human resource capacity. Apart from school readiness to provide all the facilities and infrastructure at any school, this paper studies about the growth of Senior High School (SHS) students’ skills in problem solving through the application of the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) based on e-learning in mathematics lesson. When the expected results can fulfill the wishes of the people, then the use of e-learning is expected to reduce pro and contra in Indonesian society about the use of e-learning in the learning activities, particularly in developing countries such as Indonesia.
